BWL Update

Backing off his earlier proposal to abolish the BWL's independent Board of Commissioners and make the utility a department of the City of Lansing was the right thing to do. Our region is best served by a strong, independent, regionalized BWL Board. Lansing voters helped us take an important step forward when they overwhelmingly approved a charter amendment to create three nonvoting seats on the Board for customer communities like East Lansing. Let's keep moving in that direction.

The Mayor's proposals to limit long-term contracts and severance payments, establish an inspector general, and "clarify" the role of BWL's in-house legal counsel deserve consideration. As always, the devil will be in the details.
