About Nathan Triplett

Nathan Triplett was elected Mayor of East Lansing in November of 2013. He has served on the East Lansing City Council since 2007 and as Mayor Pro Tem since 2011. He graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in  2012, University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in 2009, and Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Theory & Bachelor of Arts in Social Relations in 2006.

Nathan Triplett was elected Mayor of East Lansing in November of 2013. At 30, he was the youngest Mayor in the City’s history. Triplett was first elected to the East Lansing City Council in 2007. He served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2011-2013. Triplett began his service to East Lansing as a member of the City’s Human Relations Commission and Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee.

 

He graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in 2012, University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in 2009, and Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Theory & Bachelor of Arts in Social Relations in 2006.

 

Nathan is currently involved with numerous community boards and commissions, including the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) Board of Directors, the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA), and the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) Board of Directors. He also serves as a member of the Michigan Municipal League (MML) Board of Trustees, a member of the MML’s Legislative Governance Committee, Transportation Infrastructure Policy Committee, and Elected Officials Academy Board. In addition to his involvement with local government, Nathan serves on the Board of Directors for Haven House, a shelter providing emergency housing and support services to families with children.  He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of East Lansing and a recipient of the Governor’s Service Award and the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 10 Over the Next 10 Award.

Triplett has served as an officer of the Ingham County Democratic Party (ICDP) and the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP). He has been recognized with the both the ICDP Geraldine Rapaport Volunteer of the Year Award and the MDP Young Democrat of the Year award. Triplett is also an appointed member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Youth Coordinating Council. He is presently the Corresponding Secretary and Parliamentarian of the Michigan Democratic Party.

 

Triplett has a long history of advancing progressive policies in East Lansing and across Michigan. He is the principal organizer of Local Electeds Against Discrimination (LEAD), a coalition of over 350 local elected officials committed to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. He also helped launch and coordinate One Capital Region, a campaign to pass inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances in four urbanized townships surrounding East Lansing.

 

His professional activities include serving as the Director of Priorities Michigan, a nonprofit civic education and engagement project aimed at changing the conversation around Michigan’s state budget to promote investment in public goods. He is a member of both the State Bar of Michigan and the Ingham County Bar Association.

 

Nathan and his wife, Sarah Gonzales Triplett, are members of the Edgewood United Church of Christ. They live in East Lansing’s Bailey Neighborhood with their dog Lexi.

Nathan is married to Sarah Gonzales Triplett and is an active member of Edgewood United Church of Christ.
