Recommitting to King's Dream

This afternoon I had the pleasure of joining the Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero to host our region's annual MLK luncheon. Mr. Hank Thomas, our keynote speaker and one of the thirteen original Freedom Riders, was an inspiration. We were honored by his presence, his words, and his service.

For me, observance of MLK Day has always been more about recommitment than about reflection. Dr. King dreamed of a world in which we are all judged by the content of our character, not the color of our skin. We've had too many reminders in recent months that his dream remains unrealized in this country. There is much work yet to be done. Today we recommit ourselves to the full realization of Dr. King's dream.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
