Yesterday evening the Lansing Board of Water and Light's Board of Commissioners voted 5-3 to fire General Manager Peter Lark. Given the level of community angst and distrust surrounding the BWL in the wake of last December's ice storm, a change of leadership may ultimately serve the utility and its customers well. Having said that, BWL customers deserve an explanation for why this action was taken and why it was taken now. This same Board voted to reappoint Mr. Lark as General Manager only six months ago. The Board's decision making was neither communicative nor transparent. Failing to fully explain the rationale for the Board's action will only compound the BWL leadership's credibility issue.
