At last night's meeting, the East Lansing City Council unanimously passed a resolution I authored calling on the Michigan Legislature to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The resolution specifically calls on the legislature to pass a bill that includes gender identity. Fair-minded Michiganders cannot and will not support legislation that leaves our transgender friends and neighbors behind. The resolution also notes that the legislature must resist any attempt to allow businesses and employers to use religion to discriminate against their LGBT employees. East Lansing banned discrimination in 1972. I think 42 years is more than enough time for the legislature to catch up.
